Barack on The Camino
Listen to Lord Byron: “There is time for departure even when there’s no certain place to go! … I’m going to look for one, now. I’m sailing to Athens. At least I can look up at the Acropolis, … and possibly, yes, still possibly, the old pure music will come to me again. Make Voyages! Attempt them! There’s nothing else…”
Listen to Barack Obama: ". . . when we have faced down impossible odds, when we've been told we're not ready or that we shouldn't try or that we can't, generations of Americans have responded with a simple creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.”

So Exciting!
Thanks for the physical work today, was great. Look forward to working on the opening piece on Thursday! Please bring in images of your character and this world. We will give all an update on our design meetings as well.
Thanks again Kate!

ask letter
February 16th, 2010
Dear Cecilia,
Greetings! I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this. I am currently in my senior year at Eugene Lang: The New School for Liberal Arts seeking a degree in The Arts with a concentration in Theater. The most exciting part of being a senior is producing a senior work in which myself and my fellow colleagues are collaborating on a new production of Tennessee Williams Camino Real. I have sent you this in hopes that you will be able to financially contribute to our work.
Working steadily closer to completing my degree here in New York City I have found new reasons why theater is important in today’s society, especially theater that brings our current social consciousness to light and bring these situations to public eye. Camino Real takes place in the fictional world of dreams that we trap ourselves in and cannot escape from; much like the pretend worlds we can place ourselves in everyday. My hope is that through this production we can awaken the audience to living in the moment, and break free of the traps that might be holding them back.
I do hope you will consider making a donation to our production. Even the smallest amount is greatly appreciated in this economical time. While we are working with incredibly knowledgeable faculty we simply do not have the financial resources needed. A contribution would make our visions for this piece truly come to life on stage.
On behalf of all of the seniors working on Camino Real, thank you!

Hello All,
I haven't figured out how to add anything to this blog, though I will and I so appreciate your help Kate in setting it up. Love the costume photos already. I am working on a possible proposal for the NYC Fringe Festival, I will send it on tonight to Erica and if anyone wants to help with the final draft, it's due tomorrow. All that can happen is they say no.
We had a decent week of rehearsal, it's a beginning, so much to do. In rereading Anne Bogart today was struck by her phrase:
"Every journey begins with disorientation. Children naturally spin one another blindfolded before an adventure. Alice falls down a rabbit hole and changes sizes...we all, audiences and artists alike, have to allow for a little personal disorientation to pave the way for experience..."
Thanks so much to all of you that are picking up props, set pieces, working on costumes, etc. Huge thanks to Lucas! And all of you for being open and willing to experiment as the music is composed.
Please really read and read this text over the weekend. Hope you all have the TW reading packet and hope to begin our discussions about those readings that are so germane to Camino and that you are each committing time and research to your own characters.
Take Care,
Cecilia

costume ideas
(the LIFE magazine archives on google are so great for images, found lots of gypsy stuff and even more exciting for me, pictures from tangiers in the 50s which have a lot of the aesthetic elements of the camino)
And then we talked at the meeting about masks, and i suggested somebody, i don't know if it's street cleaners or la madrecita or who, having masks inspired by these one's from a Viktor and Rolf show from 2007 i think
and then i was also looking at the veils from this comme des garcons show from 2006, where all the models were done up as brides, as possible inspiration for la madrecita or esmeralda or i dunno, somebody bc this shit is really great.
wow this is a ton of pictures.
